A faculty member I used to work with as a Masters student used to say that faculty meetings should be held at 4:30 on Friday afternoons. Perhaps our new dean will investigate this as a possibility.

Of course, faculty are known for talking to talk. We have the occasional half-day and full-day faculty meeting, and horrifyingly manage to fill all of that time too.

Nice - Tim Ferriss wrote about this exact thing somewhere, I'll have to dig it up. Mostly it's a psychological need/requirement to fill allotted time. He recommends always sending out an agenda and having everyone prepared to discuss specific things, do so, and adjourn. And then there's that thing about reserving conference rooms on the hour...

Because people fill. Space. Time. Money. Air. And few people know how to run a meeting. If meetings had PURPOSES -- distinct, measurable purposes -- then we could go when we met our goals. Most meetings (and especially those where you work) have AGENDAS. Agendas fill time. Purpose fills, well, an objective.

It's the same reason I always have enough stuff to fill my house. I've nearly doubled my square footage twice and still have a house full of junk and no where to hang anything. I've earned more money virtually every year I've worked and still find a way to spend it all. If I get a free day, I still find a way to spend the time. Maybe it's entropy, but it takes proactive work to counter the trend.

Would that more folks would counter the trend in meetings, phone calls, and speeches.
